Artist Grants in the UK: How to Find and Apply
A clear map of major UK public arts funders for individual artists — what each nation offers, how to prepare, and how to check live deadlines.

Public arts funding in the UK is devolved. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run separate councils with different programmes, portals and calendars. The fastest way to waste a month is to prepare an England application while living in Glasgow, or to cite a closed round as if it were open.
This article maps the main national doorways for individual artists, explains how to prepare once, and shows how to verify live details before you apply. Amounts and deadlines below were checked on official pages on 4 November 2026. They change — always re-read the funder page on the day you submit.
Start with eligibility geography
Ask one blunt question first: where do you live and primarily practise?
- England → Arts Council England
- Scotland → Creative Scotland
- Wales → Arts Council of Wales
- Northern Ireland → Arts Council of Northern Ireland
Most individual funds require you to be based in that nation. Dual lives need careful reading of guidance; do not guess.
Secondary question: are you applying as an individual or through an organisation? Mixing those routes is a common rejection reason.
England — Arts Council England
Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP)
DYCP supports individual creative and cultural practitioners to focus on career development — learning, risk-taking and a meaningful shift in practice, not primarily community delivery projects.
According to Arts Council England’s DYCP pages (checked 4 Nov 2026):
- The fund was closed after Round 24 decisions.
- Guidance for applicants states individuals can apply for £2,000–£12,000 for activity lasting up to one year, must live in England, be 18+, and hold a UK individual bank account in the applicant’s name.
- Round 25 is announced to open in Summer 2027, with more details by March 2027.

National Lottery Project Grants (NLPG)
Project Grants is Arts Council England’s open-access programme for arts, libraries and museums projects. The programme page states it is always open for applications between £1,000 and £100,000 (checked 4 Nov 2026). Individuals can apply; readiness tools and guidance sit on the same hub.

Practical note: You generally should not treat DYCP and NLPG as simultaneous dual applications without reading current rules — ACE guidance has previously stated you cannot apply to both at the same time and must await a decision. Confirm on the live guidance before planning parallel submissions.
Scotland — Creative Scotland
Open Fund for Individuals
Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals supports freelance and self-employed artists and creative practitioners living in Scotland. Official pages (checked 4 Nov 2026) state:
- Fund open
- Apply for £500–£50,000
- Activity for up to 24 months
- Applicants must be 18+, living in Scotland, with a UK bank account in their name
- Decision timescales commonly 10 weeks (£500–£20,000) or 14 weeks (£20,001–£50,000), with published festive adjustments in late 2026

Wales — Arts Council of Wales
Arts Council of Wales restructured funds in 2026. Two individual-relevant routes to know:
Creative Practice
Designed for artists and creative professionals to dedicate time to experimentation, mentoring and professional development rather than predetermined public outcomes. Official page (checked 4 Nov 2026):
- Awards £500–£10,000
- Individuals must be based in Wales
- Published 2026 deadlines included 20 May 2026 and 9 September 2026 (both 1pm) — as of 4 November 2026 those dates have passed; check arts.wales for the next round before preparing an application
- Allow at least ten working weeks between deadline and project start
Create and Engage
Funds development, creation and delivery of arts experiences where the main beneficiaries are the people engaging with the project. Individuals and organisations can apply; individuals must be based in Wales. Award levels stated on the official page: small up to £10,000; large £10,001–£60,000; maximum 90% of eligible project costs from the Council, with at least 10% from other sources (can include support in kind).

If you need practice development without a public-engagement focus, Creative Practice is the closer fit; if audiences are central, use Create and Engage.
Northern Ireland — Arts Council of Northern Ireland
ACNI’s Support for Individual Artists Programme (SIAP) includes several schemes. On 4 November 2026:
- Major Individual Artists and Project Funding for Individuals pages stated the programmes were closed (2026/27 round). Major Individual Artists guidance had offered four awards of up to £15,000 each for that year — useful context, not a live call.
- Travel Awards were described as a rolling programme: apply at least four weeks before travel; departure within six months of application; return within twelve months. Invitation evidence from a host organisation is required.

Do not submit to a closed SIAP page. Watch the funding hub for the next opening and download that year’s PDF guidance.
Beyond the four councils
National Lottery distributors are not the only route:
- Local authority arts grants and city culture funds
- Trusts and foundations with visual arts remits
- Artist-focused organisations and bursaries — note that a-n’s public site now presents as Artists Now (a-n.co.uk), which publishes bursaries and professional development opportunities; check live notices rather than old PDF roundups
- Residencies that include fees or production budgets
- Small independent grants and international open calls (including ArtFundMe’s $1,000 cycle)
Build a simple tracker: fund name, geography, amount range, deadline, portal login, status.
How to prepare once, apply many times
- Core pack: 5–10 strong images with captions; CV (2 pages); biography (150 words); artist statement (150–250 words); website or PDF portfolio.
- Budget literacy: learn each funder’s eligible costs and fee guidance. Underpaying yourself to look modest often weakens applications.
- Evidence of need and timing: development funds want a reason why now.
- Letters of support: request early; DYCP guidance explicitly warns to allow time.
- Portal hygiene: create accounts before deadline week; browsers fail at 16:59.
Application strategy without mythology
Rejection is normal. Success rates for open programmes are competitive. Improve odds by:
- Applying only when eligible
- Matching the fund’s purpose (practice shift vs public project)
- Showing a coherent body of work
- Writing plainly (see our artist statement guide)
- Leaving time to fix missing attachments
Do not pay consultants who guarantee funding. Do not invent partners. Do not submit the same generic paragraph to every nation.
FAQ
Can I apply to more than one UK arts council?
Usually you apply where you are based. Read eligibility carefully if you split time between nations.
Are these loans?
No — the programmes summarised here are grants, but they come with reporting conditions. Read offer letters.
Do I need an agent or gallery?
No for these public individual funds. You need a clear practice and, where required, evidence of professional activity.
What if a deadline just passed?
Put the next round in your calendar and strengthen the core pack. Do not chase closed portals.
Applying to ArtFundMe
National funds are essential infrastructure. Smaller cycles can still bridge materials, time and confidence between larger applications. ArtFundMe runs an international $1,000 grant cycle with Honourable Mentions selected by the administrator — separate from UK national funding and never a substitute for reading your nation’s guidance.
